Food Freeze Dryer Systems: Home, Commercial, and Industrial FFD
Food freeze dryer and food lyophilizer describe the same equipment category: a frozen product is dried under vacuum while water vapor is captured on a low-temperature condenser. Buyers more often use “freeze dryer” for food production and “lyophilizer” in technical specifications, but the sizing questions are the same.
Choose the machine by production stage
SJ Scientific separates the food range into three practical groups. This keeps a recipe-development purchase from being confused with a factory line and gives growing producers a clear scale-up path.
| Production stage | SJ range | Reference scale | Typical planning focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home, R&D, micro-production | SJ-05H to SJ-20H | About 5-30 kg fresh load | Recipe trials, small food brands, home freeze dryer use, packaging tests |
| Commercial cabinet batches | SJ-30H, SJ-35H, SJ-50H | About 30-70 kg fresh load | Repeatable weekly production, labor, power, cleaning, batch records |
| Industrial cart-based production | FFD-50 to FFD-250 | About 500-2500 kg fresh load | Pre-freezing, carts, utilities, sanitation, condenser load, kg/day |
Fresh-load figures are planning references, not guaranteed output for every food. Practical capacity changes with product geometry, loading thickness, water content, freezing method, cycle time, final moisture and the time needed for defrost, cleaning and packaging.
What “food-grade lyophilizer” should mean in a quotation
“Food grade” should be translated into inspectable requirements rather than treated as a model label. Review food-contact materials, tray and cart construction, drainability, access for cleaning, compatible gaskets, product-protection workflow, control records and the cleaning method for the actual food. Meat, seafood, dairy, pet food, coffee and fruit can require different sanitation and odor-control decisions.
Also ask the supplier to identify the chamber, condenser, refrigeration system, vacuum system, heating method, control platform and utility requirements. A stainless-steel cabinet alone does not show whether the complete food lyophilizer is correctly sized.
Commercial H series: 30H, 35H and 50H
The commercial H range is for producers who have moved beyond occasional trials but can still operate individual cabinet batches. The SJ-30H, SJ-35H and SJ-50H provide progressively more tray area while retaining a compact commercial workflow.
For a meaningful comparison, calculate prepared wet load per tray, complete cycle and turnaround time, batches per week, operator hours and packaging capacity. The machine should fit the whole operating day, not only the drying step.
FFD industrial systems: 50-250 m2 shelf area
FFD systems are planned as production equipment. The model number follows usable shelf area: FFD-50, FFD-100, FFD-130, FFD-150, FFD-200 and FFD-250.
Industrial sizing must connect shelf area to peak water-vapor load and condenser duty. It should also cover pre-freezing, cart movement, door and room layout, cooling and electrical utilities, defrost, cleaning, unloading humidity and moisture-barrier packaging.
Applications and the data that changes the cycle
Fruit, vegetables, candy, coffee extract, ready meals, meat, seafood, pet food, cultures and functional ingredients can all be freeze dried. They should not share an unreviewed cycle. Send product photos, dimensions or liquid depth, pretreatment, initial moisture, target moisture or water activity, required appearance, prepared kilograms per batch and daily output.
For process detail, read the food freeze-drying process guide and the industrial operation guide.
Price, quotations and supplier comparison
Commercial food freeze dryer price cannot be compared from kg/batch alone. Tray area, condenser and refrigeration duty, vacuum configuration, controls, materials, pre-freezing, carts, utilities, freight, commissioning, documentation and spare parts can change both purchase price and lifecycle cost. Use the commercial food freeze dryer price guide to request comparable quotations.
When comparing a food freeze dryer manufacturer or supplier, ask for the sizing assumptions, utility list, layout, test scope, documentation index, service plan and a clear list of inclusions and exclusions. A lower quote with missing site work or condenser margin may not be the lower-cost project.
Frequently asked questions
Is a food lyophilizer the same as a food freeze dryer?
Yes. Both terms describe equipment that freezes food and removes ice by sublimation under vacuum. “Freeze dryer” is more common in food production, while “lyophilizer” often appears in technical and international procurement language.
Which commercial food freeze dryer should I choose?
Use the SJ-30H, SJ-35H or SJ-50H when production is still organized as cabinet batches of roughly 30-70 kg fresh material. Move to FFD when daily output requires carts, separate pre-freezing, factory utilities and industrial material flow.
How much does a commercial food freeze dryer cost?
The price depends on usable tray or shelf area, refrigeration and condenser duty, vacuum equipment, controls, materials, utilities, loading system, shipping, commissioning and documentation. Send the product and production target before comparing quotations.
What makes a food lyophilizer food grade?
Food-contact materials, cleanable construction, drainage, tray and cart design, compatible seals, product-protection workflow, documented controls and a cleaning plan appropriate to the food are more useful criteria than the words “food grade” alone.
How is FFD industrial capacity estimated?
Use shelf area, tray loading density, product thickness, water removed, peak sublimation load, condenser margin, cycle and defrost time, batches per day and packaging capacity. Fresh kilograms per batch alone are not enough.
Freeze dryer machine terms used by food-equipment buyers
International buyers may search for a freeze dryer machine for food, freeze dry machine, food lyophilizer, or general food drying equipment. On this site, these terms lead to the same selection path: H Series for home, farm, testing, and small batches; Commercial H for repeatable 30-70 kg cabinet batches; and FFD for cart-based industrial production.
A freeze dryer is not interchangeable with every dryer machine. Hot-air, heat-pump, vacuum, microwave, and freeze-drying equipment use different heat and mass-transfer conditions. Select the process from the required product quality, throughput, energy plan, sanitation, and selling price rather than the search phrase alone.
